The opening and closing of the film: a crummy hotel in an (animated) skid-row district, inhabited by "the Gamin."
The Gamin is pursued by the police. (Film noir photography doesn't get any better than this.)
She encounters a frightened girl selling flowers.
The Gamin pauses to peek down the alley where the police car drives by.
No escape.
Desperate, she pulls out her switchblade.
The Gamin makes it indoors, but there's no refuge there, either.
